London school of ecnonomics, centre for learning technology say, "Distance learning courses have always struggled to hold on to their students and steer them through to successful completion. While the Internet provides institutions with the tools to incorporate interactivity, group work and new forms of content, many of the factors contributing to distance learner dropout remain unaddressed, and the personality profile of the successful distance learner has altered very little.
This workshop will explore the needs of the modern distance learner, and how they can be met in the current distance education landscape, including the rise of the MOOC in its various guises"
